Derrick Street homeless camp set to reopen after major renovations

Once littered with years of debris and trash, the camp has undergone a complete overhaul to make it a safer and cleaner space. City officials have installed a new metal privacy fence with emergency vehicle access on both Derrick Street and Hall Avenue. There is also a fresh asphalt slab where residents will soon have designated living spaces. The slab has been painted with 84 squares, each measuring 12-by-12 feet. Wooden platforms will be installed within each square to mount 10-by-10 tents. Each tent can house up to two people, but sharing will not be a requirement. ... Community Development Manager Scott Erwin said there will be clear rules in place for those staying at the site. ...The rules will be enforced, but they will offer warnings and work to find out just why someone would refuse to follow them ... "Everyone has value, no one is better than anyone else, we all have to work together," Cameron said. "It's mothers out there, it's fathers out there.
